ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE We do not identify ourselves with the opinions that may be expressed by our correspondents. THE ROADS. (TO THE EDITOR OF TH» - DCKSTAN TIMES.) Sir,—l read in your paier of about a fortnight back an article on the desirability of letting out the making an \ repairing of our roads by contract. I eut rely approve of your ideas on those matters, and think that were effect given to them alarge saving would result to the country. 1 consider the pjesent system of "surfacemen" as now employed in repairing the roads, only a waste of money, and giving encouragement to a lot of lazy loafers, whom nobody but the Government would employ. I have been watching since I read your article the men employed between this and Cromwell, and find they go to work about 10 o'clock in the morning, and leave off between half past three and four in the afternoon, and I am sure that there is not two good hours' work (.one a day by any one of these men. Their mode of repairing and filling in places is ridiculous, and in many cases the ruts and holes are only made worse. Between Clyde and Black's the same system is being pursued, as witness the ridiculously little amount of work performed daily.by the road party atJCkatto Cieek. I hope, sir, that the Secretary for Land and Works, when he reads this] will make inquiries into the absurd system of road management in this district, and discharge the 'a;y surface men at once, and let out the repairing of the roa 's by contract, when we shall have work done for our money I am &c. TRAVELLER Cromwell, June 22, IS6B.
