CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday, the 9th inst., at 7 p.m. D. M'Pherson, Mayor, and full Council were present. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence were read and received. The Town Clerk was instructed to com • municate with Mr. J. Holt, to the effc t tba fiis Council have no power to deal with the leasing of minerals under purchased property, and to return the plan of the ground applied for. The motion in the name of Cr. M'Connocdiie, That the services of the Inspector Nuisances be dispensed with, lapsed for want of a seconder. The application of Rims and Party for permission to erect a dam on the Municipal Reserve at the rear of the (..'amp, was toferred to the Public Works Committee. The Town Clerk produced and lead the opinion of Mr. George Cook, Solicitor as to the liability of the Council for the < . ficieney of the late Town Clerk. The opii - ion is to the effect That there is no stat'-„ tn-y provision making the Council colli ctively or indivi lual liable for the loss, though they wore guilty of neglect in not taking the necessary securities. Cr- Hazlett stated'that though they were not legally liable they were, he felt in honor bound to make the deficiency good. Cr. Ryan supported Cr. Hazlett and suggested that a private meeting of the Councillors should be held to discuss the matte. The application of the Library Committee for the use of the Town Hall for tho purposes of a Public Library, was referred to a sub-committee. Proposed by Cr. M'Connochie, " That in the opinion of this Council, the want of a bridge across the Manuherikia rirer, also one across the Shotovor river is very prejudicial to the interests of the District, and that the advantages of the opening of tho main line of road between the Dunstan and Queenstown Districts are thereby rendered inoperative, inasmuch as it is quite impossible for wheeled traffic to ply between tho two places, except but at great risk to lifo and property. Further that the free and expeditious interchange of commodities between the two districts, considering that there is a great demand for locally produced articles, especially for mining, building and agricultural purposes, would tend largely to increase the population by affording additional employment to the people, let alone the great advantages to be derived from the cheapening of mining material, together with many of the necessaries essential to life. This Council therefore do memorialise His Honor the Superintendent to proceed at once with the erection of a, bridgesacr ss theShotoverand Manuher'kia Kivers, and that this resolution be includ d in the memorial. Seconded by Couucillor Hazlett and carried. Accounts to the amount of L2SO Cs oJ» were passed for payment. \ vote of thanks to the Chair terminated the proceedings.
