The evidence of the prosecutor, and other witnesses, being corroborative, the prisoner was sentenced to one month's hard labor Several debt cases occupied the atten. tion of the Court, but none of suftient importance to deserve a report A meeting of the Clyde Library Committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: Messrs. M'Pherson (in the chair), Hazlett, M'Connochie, Cambridge, and Fache. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary reported that he had written to Mr. Hislop, the Secretary oi the Educational Board, for information respecting the subsidising of libraries, and also for a catalogue of books on hand. Mr. Hislop, in reply, stated that the Government subsidy was at the rate of £'l (in books) for £1 subscribed. He also stated that there were no books on hand, but that some were expected in about six months. The Government would either supply books to twice the amount of cash received or to equal the amount of purchases through other sources. The Secretary with the view of starting the Library, was [requested to write to the various booksellers in Melbourne for their catalogues and lists of prices, also to ascertain the cost of the various Periodicals, A-c. ThcTreasurer reported that..£42 17sGd was the amount of funds in hand. A vote of thanks to the Chair concluded the proceedings. The " Evening Star " of April 30. says :—" We have received a communication from an inhabitant of the Municipality of Clyde, disclosing a most extraordinary state of things as existing in the management of the Corporation business in that town. Our correspondent is perfectly reliable, and we only regret that the present state of the law of libel, as it affects newspapers, prevents us from publishing his letter.
