BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. THE MISSING SHIP GENERAL GRANT. SEVENTY-SEVEN' LIVES LOST. ARRIVAL OF THE SURVIVORS AT THE BLUFF. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, Thursday, 4.30 p.m. The American ship General Grant, of Boston, 1,005 tons, Captain Loughland, sailed from Melbourne on the 4tli of May, 18G6, with a cargo of wool and six boxes of gold. On the 13th she sighted the Auckland Isles ) the weather being thick. It fell calm, and the ship was found close to the land, with a strong current setting her towards the shore. On the next day the ship struck against some perpendicular rocks, higher than the ship’s mast. This was on the west side of the island, and at every roll of the sea large pieces of rock fell upon the deck. Then the yards and masts went with a crash. The ship was now firmly embedded between two big overhanging headlands. The boats had to bo lowered over the stern of the vessel. With daylight the wind and sea increased fearfully fast. As soon as the boats wci out and filled with passengers and crew they disappeared in the boiling serf, and only seventeen out of eighty-three souls succeeded in landing on the island, after having been exposed to the fury of the elements for three days and nights in open boats. On the 22nd of January, 18G7, the chief officer and three of the crew left the island in an open boat, to endeavor to reach New Zealand. One of the survivors, a man, died upon the island. Nine men and the stewardess were taken off the island by the whaling brig Amhnrst on the 21st of November, 18G7, and were landed at the Bluff last night. An official inquiry is now being held by Mr. O’Toole, Sub-collector of Customs, the Resident Magistrate, and Captain Waldron into the cause of the wreck. Ashworth ; of the crew alive, are Mary Ann Jewell, Stewardess, Cornelius Drew, William Furguson, I far. on Dayman, A. M. Sanglier and Joseph Jewell.
