Total 4,3610z. 14dwt On Sunday last the Township of Clyde had a very narrow escape from becoming a prey to fire. About Ten o’clock a.m. a building occupied by Mr. Martin, and once known as the Commercial Hotel caught fire from the roof, it is supposed from a portion of the calico lining coming in contact with the stove pipe. In less than ten minutes the devouring element had done its work, and nothing remained but charred embers. Had there been any wind blowing at the time, the greater portion of the Town must have been destroyed, for despite the ample assistance at hand, and the readiness which water was thrown upon the lire its progress was so rapid, that all efforts to confine the flam:s to the one building would have been useless. The Scandinavian Water Race Company St. Bathan’s, declared their first dividend amounting to .£l7 10s 0d per .£2OO share on the first of January last. Since the race has been completed, debts to the amount of £SOOO have been paid off, this, together with the present dividend amounts in the aggregate to £6050. It is expected that the next dividend will bo at the rate of 25 per cent, upon the capital of the Company, which is all paid up. Previous to the departure from Mt. Ida of Mr John Allen Preshaw, Agent for the Bank of New South Wales for Cromwell, at which place he undertakes a similar duty, ho was presented with a small service of Silver Plate, by a few of his friends as a token of their esteem and respect. The “Daily Times” says;,— The General Government are not backward in rewarding their supporters of last Session. Wo have already mentioned Mr. Ilaughton’s appointment to the Penal Commission—upon what ground of fitness it is hard to determine. Ho is now, we understand, deputed on a special mission to Melbourne, to make himself acquainted, for the benefit of the Commission, with the system pursued at the Pentridge Penal Establishment. We have received Mrs. Nugent Wood's new book of poems, entitled Bush Flowers from Australia, by a daughter of the soil. The work is published in London by Messrs Ncsbit of Berners Street, and is in a really presentable form, and a fit companion for Cottage, or I [all. Many of the poems arc characteristic of Anstralian life, and to those who have lived, either there or in Now Zealand, (hoy cannot fail to be highly appreciated. The language is exceedingly natural, and we can almost realise some of the scenes depicted by the Authoress.
The Government have authorised an expenditure of i!COOO in addition •to sums already voted for the repairs of the main lines of road through the Province. The recent floods are said to have done much injury almost everywhere.
