CROMWELL.

(From Our Ow.n Correspondent.) The holiday sports did not end with the Cromwell Races, but the miners in the Va* rious outlying localities enjoyed themselves with the utmost spirit, At Mr. Halliday's Hotel, Shepherd Creek, ;i largo number were congregated, and athletic Sports of every kind were improvised to the unbounded delight of all present. At Richard's Bannockburn Hotel, there was music and" dancing almost night and day, and our host very deservedly reaped a most satisfactory harvest. At Mr. Stuart's Ferry Hotel, Bannockburn, there was a capital meeting, and upon no occasion during the holidays could more possibly have enjoyed themselves more sterlingly. Mr. Stuart gave six prizes of respectable value to be competed for, and all the gullies of the district had their rep esentatives in the contcatA even some coming from Potter's and within four miles f the Nevis. The Sports con sisted of Sack racing, Quoiting, Barrow racing, with the runners blindfolded, and what is termed "three legged racing"- this expression may seem inexplicable to many, but it consists in having the right leg of one man tied to the left of another, and thus the two men run on three legs; several pairs of men were thus bound together, and the race was most arousing. Racing with unfettered limbs also took place, and • other interesting amusements. The Hotel keepers refered to state that, they never found money so plentiful amongst the miners. This fact tells much in favor of our auriferous resources. At the Kawarau Gorge, there were also sports, and which proved highly successful.
