Monday, sth August The arguments upon demurrer in the | actio' s brought by Messrs Robinson and j Fvery, against the Speaker of the Provincial Council, occupied three days. The legal points involved wee minutely examined by each of the learned Counsel engaged, the cases have exited no little attention; his Honor Mr Justice Chapman has reserved his Judgment until to mor row. There has been no other business of interest in the Courts. The election for City Councillors, took place on Thursday, the following are the results, South Ward : Fish, 1! 9, Edmond, 104 ; High Ward : Carrick, 199, Ilalliday 56;Leith Ward: Driver, 143, Wilson, 133;f0r Auditors: Fleming, 482, Evans, 412, Ball, 402, Bayliss, IG3. There was very little excitement manifest, except in Leith Ward, where the contest was a close one. The Escort was delayed some hours on Tuesday last, by the deplorable state of the roads. It brought down 1035 ounces 13dwts,. The Egmont which sailed on Saturday, took away 7125 ounces. The Gold Revenue for last month, amounted to .£1349, being duty on 10,759 ounces The Customs Revenue for the same period was £15.977 0s 2d The ship lady Egidia, which arrived from London, on Sunday last, made a splendid passage of 81 days. She brings a large number of passengers, also a large and valuable cargo, she also brought live stock of good breed. By the Daniel Watson, from llobart Town, the Acclimatisation Society, has received a quantity of tench, and already, the work of stocking our rivers with fish, has commenced. The Society has within the last six months made rapid strides, and is fast becoming a valuable institution. The weather has been very severe, rain wind, and co'd are the prevailing phases of the day and night. Our streets are in a deplorable state, the weather, aided by the neglect of the Corporation has rendered some of them almost impassable. One effect of the recent gales has been to cut off Telegraphic communication with Wellington, Nelson, Blenheim, Ticton Holsitika, Greymouth, Nelsop, Lyttelton, Christchurch, Qucenstown, and (lydc. It is supposed that the lines on the Sea Coast arc completely washed away, and if so, it. will be some time before wo again have news from the North.
