DUNEDIN.
[from ocr avrs correspondent.] There is very little local news of any importance. The Airedale, which arrived here on Saturday, brings not only the Panama Mail, but so much intelligence of interest from Wellington, that the sayings and doings in the latter place are now the whole and sole topics of attraction. and even our ily elections are likely to pass over with no excitement, and with very little attention. ') he general impression here, is that the Session of the General Assembly will prove the source of many acts of good t'> the Province. • hortly after the election for Mayor, it was discovered that the Mayor elect, would lose his seat if he was not here to be sworn in by the 29tli inst. Expectation was aroused as to what the result would be. there was talk of a fresh elee- : tion, but the matter lias been settled by the arrival hereof His Worship the Hon. ■f. H Harris, who landed by the.Airdale yesterday, took the required oaths, and wlio returned to Wellington by the Lord Ashley immediately. Mr Birch has been re-elected fir the' Hell Ward, without '-pposition. The! candidates for South W.ud arc, Messrs .1 lulmond and IT. S. Fish juniv-for High Ward, Mr Carriek offers himself: again, and is opposed by Mr llalliday, Mr Privcr is also a candidate for I eith Ward his opponent being Mr Jas Wilson. Meetings arc being held by each of the candidates, and there very likely will be a sharp contest, as canvassing is being actively carried on. The actions against the Speaker, are fixed for argument upon demurrer for' Tuesday. The plaintiffs (Every an d Robinson) evidently believe in a " multitude of Councillors" for they have retained Messrs Smith, Macasscy, Ilowarth and Parsons. Judgment was given ;:i the Appeal, against the decision uf Judge Grey, heard at, Clyde, Reid and ors, appellants and Holmes and or 3 respondents, His Honor in gi'ing judgment, said, the present point in dispute on which the decision of the Court was sought, was clearly defined and is, whether the respondents are com polled to draw their right of water under the old guage, or under the new giwc. The oid guage under which the respondents obtained their original certificate was repealed, thereby as effectually away, as if they never existed, and as the respondents had complied with all the preliminaries imposed upon them by the now regulations, they are entitled to measure their sluice heads originally granted under the old regulations, by the new guage. Therefore the judgment of the Warden., and District Judge must stand, and the Appeal dismissed. ome time ago, our Corporation in a desperate lit of retrenchment, dismissed all the day-men, and as a natural consequence, the streets were sadly neglected. A few days after their dismissal, there was a heavy fall of rain, and through a | "gully hole "or drain not being looked after, the water flowed into Messrs Hcymanson and Sons collar*, Rattray Street, ■ and a quantity of goods stored there, were damaged, for this, £IOO has been rccover- \ ed in the Resident Magistrate's Court. The Lady Fgidia. ship, has arrived from ; London, after ,-i prosperous and speedy i p 'wage.
