THE LAKES.
(FROM A COKP.EPrONPEST.) Queenstown, 15th May. Shot,- fell pretty heavily on tlie ranges during the nights of Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday last, and the supply of water to the creeks "has been thereby materially increased, not Lowever before it was wanted. The reefs at Skippers are looking tip eonsrto lontly, tl esciSidiuavian Company, last week, had a cleaning up, and the result was a cake of o2J ounces from 200 tons of stone—this, with their present crushing power of fifteen head of stamps, would he the result of ten day's woik. , The claim looks remarkably well, and there is hot the least doubt, but that notwithstanding the largo outlay of capital,' the shareho'dcrs j will be amply repaid. Perry's ia also looking tip ; it is said thit they have lit upon first-n-.te j Btone in their own shaft. Southberg and O. are down over two hundered feet in the reef, and still find the body of stone as compact *s 'ever and its gold bearing qualities equally as good. There is quite a reaction setting in in favor of the reefs, and transactions in shares are being talked about. The Wakatip Mail has re-appcarcd under a new proprietory—the stoppage of that journal caused quite a sensation ; people scarcely knew before the value of a local paper till it ceased to exist. It is a great pity that journals are not better supported on the goldfields thah they arc, and that narrow mindedness looks upon the journalists with envious jealousy, rather than as a public benefactor—small as the up-country newspapers are, they have conferred inestimable benefits. A thorough re-organisation of the Wakatip Hospital is intended, and expenses are to he curtailed. The House-Surgeon's salary is to be reduced by L.IOO pc? annum, and the domestic servants in proportion.
