PUBLIC MEETING AT NEVIS.

[ (sßOk A ■COKRESPOSfJEST.) A public meeting of the NevW inhabitants was hnld at Powler's Hotel, on' the evening of the 11th inst., for the purpose of expressing their satisfaction with the General Government, for having withdrawn the Goldfields' admini**tration from the Provincial authorities. The meeting was presided overV^^'V^M' Kotle ' and was well attended, and the resolutions unanimously passed. MoVed by Mr M'lntyre and seconded by Mr J. Murray :—That this meeting desires to express its approval of the measures adopted by the General Government in withdrawing the "management of the Goldfield's from the Provincial Government. Moved by Mr Howell and seconded by Mr Aitken:—That thisTneetihg having expressed its approval of the policy adapted by the General Government, are further of opinion that they are entitled to receive the energetic support of th 3 whole mining community ; and this meeting pledges itself to support the General Government in its action anent the Goldfield Management. Moved by Mr Macnamarra and seconded by Mr Kirby :—That a committee be appointed to draw up a memorial to His Excellency in accordance with the foregoing resolutions, consisting of the undermentioned gentlemen :—Messrs M'lntyre, Starkey, M'Kone, Howell, Woolly, Stratford, Aitken, and Murray; also, authorising them to obtain signatures to the same. The proposers and seconders of the several resolutions made most telling speeches condemnatory of Provincial management. The following is a copy of the memorial : To His Excellency, Sir George Gray, K.C.8., Governor of New Zealand, &c, &c.,—May it please Your Excellency. Your petitioners, the miners of the Nevis district, learn with much satisfaction, that Your Excellency has taken • the managcmeEt of the Goldfields into your own hancl3 for the following reasons, namely :—■ That the administration of the Goldfields wy Ili3 Provincial Government of Otago, has been gr n-iously insufficient and burdensome. That the Provincial Government has misa iplied the revenue derived from the Goldfields, and diverts them from the purposes to which they should have been legitimately devoted. That a great proportion of the expenditure on public works has been injudiciously made, and much of it wrecklcssly wasted. Your petitioners having lost all hope of obtaining any redress to their grievances through the Provincial Government, trust that Your Excellency will continue to withhold the Goldfields administration from the Provincial authorities. And your petitioners will ever pray.
