Our sporting friends will be sorry to learn that, through an accident whilst leaping a hurdle; Mr Kinross' horse Paniel O'Kouke, will be •withdrawn from the Handicap Steeple ( hose. It appears that the horse was out. practising: and that whilst taking a hurd e jump, one of his hind feet struck his fore leg, thereby lacerating and tearing the sinews; ic was feared at the time that, the horse would have to be shot, but we believe that was not resorted to. a t the Licensing Court, adjourned from the 4th. Inst., held on the 18th Inst, at Clyde, before 11. W. Robinson R. M. and J. D. Feiuud J. P. thirty five General and other Licenses were granted ; four through no appearance were refused, and one as not being recommended by the Police. A meeting of the Hunstan Jockey Club Committee, was held at W. R. George's Dunstan Hotel, on Monday evening last Mr VV. Fraser occupied the Chair. After the minuteu of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, the following business was carried. That the nomination in the name of H. Prince, for the Handicap Steeple Chase be altered to M. Malaghau. That the contractors for repairing the Kace Course, be paid twenty pounds on account; and that the next meeting be held at Sydney Hotel, on the evening of the 26th. Mr H. C. Jone3, was proposed as a member of the Jockey Club
It must astonish the visitor to Clyde to see the improvements that have and are now taking place in buildings, almost every tradesman is adding to the extent and usefulness of his premises. The township now boasts of some of the finest business places in this part of the country Mr Allen Fitch, of the London House, has just completed the erection of most extensive premises ; Mr George, of the Dunstan Hotel, has so renovated and added to the old house that you can scarcely recognise it. "Other tradesmen have also made similar although not such extensive alterations. The Punt at the Nevis Ferry, Kawarau River, on the main line of road from Cromwell to Queeustown, was opened for traffic on Friday last. Ihe occasion was one of great rejoicing, the christening ceremony was performed by Mrs Edwards the wife of one of the proprietors. Dunedin Punch, after an absence of one week, has again put in an appearance. Seeing a notice in the columns of our facetious friend that his first quarter had expired, we were almost fain to believe that his other three had never preserved an existence ; or, perhaps, from unaccountable causes had become food for 1 obv. However, we are glad to find our friend'is still in the land of the living It will be seen by our advertising columns that a grand inter-provincial pigeon shooting match, for a sweepstakes of 200 sovereigns, is to come off at Vauxhall Gardens, Dunedin, on the 29th inst. About 70 Chinamen have located themselves, during the last week, on the banks of the Molyneux, between Clyde and Cromwell. After repeated trials, the Chinese have decided that the banks of the noble river are more certainly remunerative than elsewhere. The Committee of the Ft. Bathan's Sports, have been unremitting in their endeavours to procure a good days amusement. We are given to understand that about £2OO has been subscribed, and will be competed for, at the Caledonian Games to take place at St. Bathans' on Boxing day.
