THE NEW SMITHY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE DUNSTAN TIMES-. Sir,—Want of opposition in almost every trade has a tendency to establish exorbitant prices, and the monopolist, by virtue of his position, treats his customers with what may be justly termed "dishonest independence." The Smith's work necessary for the district must have been much more than reasonably remunerative to those who executed it. A few days past I noticed in your columns an advertisement of Mr Alfred Moore, the proprietor of the newly established Yarra Yarra Shoeing Forge, by which it appears and has been proved, that tfce public can have their horses shod in a very superior manner at one-fourth less price than they could a few days previous to the opening of the Yarra Yarra Shoeing Forge. No sooner were the reduced prices made known through the colums of your paper, than the proprietor of the other forge placarded a similar reduction, thus: " New Smithy," shoeing at 15s and 20s per set! ! ! It certainly is a re-opened Smithy, but the old Dunstan smith will be in it ; and, in the absence of opposition, the old prices would soon spring into existence anew, when the highprice " Richard will soon be himself again," to the grievous cost of the public. The title of "New Smithy," suggests naturally the notion of the establishment being a new one, and not an old one re-opened ; and if the proprietor expects that the new designation will causo the public to believe that the old prices have for ever passed away, and that reasonable others have been substituted, he will find himself cherishing anticipations that will never be realised. The public will no doubt bear in mind the past exhorbitant prices and support consistently the Yarra Yarra Shoeing Forge, aa an encouragement for others to break down effectively the stronghold of monopoly.
