MINING INTELLIGENCE. ST. BATHAN'S.

(FROM OUII OWN CORRESPONDENT.) lGth Oct. The dry weather which has prevailed for the last two months has been followed by a rainfall such as has not visited this district for many years, and causing a flood which has been productive of much loss to the miners. It commenced to rain on Wednesday evening and c mtinued to fall in torrents all Thursday without the lightest intermission. The dam of the Sludge Channel, at the head of Blue Gully, gave way at an early hour, and the Channel itself soon silted up the Company who were washing-up, had a large quantity of of their wash-dirt carried away. The large channel of the Scandinavian Company at Surface Hil 1 , has also been filled up with tailings; the race of the same Company, has been washed away in several places, as has also that of the Mountain and Enterprise Companies. .Several miners who have had their claims damaged from this cause, are about to sue the (Jumpauies for compensation ; it is to be hoped, however, that they will be non-suited. It would be hard indeed if the proprietors of water-races were to be held responsible for the vagaries of the 'Clerk of the Weather." The Nationa 1 School was opened yesterday, under the management of Mr Ralph Darling, the master appointed by the Committee. A Tea M eeting will be held next Monday evening, in the School-house in aid of the funds The road to Blackstone Hill has been much damaged by the flood, the approaches to the Manuherikia have been rendered almost impassible, the tracks having been washed away ; it is high time that the Government commenced the formation of this road. A promise was made to a deputation from here some months ago> that the work would be commenced forthwith and up to this time nothing has been done.
