[fkou a correspondent.] Hogburn, May 7. A Grand Concert and Ball in aid of the funds of the District School was held in the Victoria Hall on the evening of the 30th ult. About 100 persons were present. The concert lasted till about 11 o'clock, Messrs. Bond, Carling, and Morrison acquitting themselves to the entire satisfaction of the audience. After singing, dancing commenced, and was kept up "till daylight did appear." The affair altogether was a great succoss. On Friday evening the friends of Mr. T. W. Draper, agent for the Bank of New Zealand entertained that gentleman at a supper, previous to his departure for Dunedin. The supper and wines, provided by Mr. E. T. George, were of that description for which the Victoria Hotel is so noted. There is still a scarcity of water. At the deep sinking one party have struck payable gold, but have not yet bottomed. Several other shafts are going down. Mr. Warden C. Broad sat in the Court here on Tuesday, and disposed of a large number of mining cases. The Assistant Mining Surveyor has also paid us a visit, and is now engaged in laying off extended claims. 4M On Saturday last a " happy co\ returned from their wedding tour, > in the evening were serenaded by Pat' chell's band.
