DUNSTAN HOSPITAL.

A well-attended meeting of the subcribera to the Dnnstan District Hospital living nt Alexandra was held at the Criterion Hotel, Eroad'street, to consider the advisability of electing a Local Committee

for the Manulierikia District—the General Committee having recommended the formation of such bodies to look after the interests of the Hospital in the out districts.

Mr. John Jack was unanimously voted to the chair, and, after explaining the objects of the meeting, called upon Mr. Cope, the Secretary to the Hospital, to instruct the meeting respecting the duties to be undertaken] by Local Committees, also the position they would occupy in regard to the General Committee.

Mr.'Cope explained that the expense of collecting funds in [consequence of the scattered nature of the population was something considerable. The area to be gone over embraced nearly one-third of the goldfields. Employment was not of that desultory nature as was the case two! years ago, and he believed that it only wanted some comprehensive mode of establishing a systematic canvass for funds, and there would be no reason to fear but that the Hospital would always be well off for funds. He considered that the proposed Local Committee should consist of five or seven members, including a Treasurer and Secretary. They could hold their meetings monthly or fortnightly as they pleased, and suit their own convenience as to the mode of operations they would pursue in the matter of collecting moneys. The Committee should keep a record of all subscribers in the district, and, as far as practicable, take such measures as should prevent persons obtaining gratuitous relief from tho Hospital who were in a position to pay; and in as much as it laid in their power, to promote the interests of the Institution. The Local Committees would of course be bound by the general rules of the Hospital, but should anything occur to them that would be conducive to its well being the General Committee upon such being represented to them, would do their utmost to forward the views of the Local Committees. The members of the Local Committees could be present at any meeting of the General Committee but of course would not be able to take an active part in the proceedings, and he thought it world be advisable that the same course should be adopted in the case of members of the General Committee attending the sitting of any Local Committee. Proposed by Mr. Theyers, " That a Local Committee be formed fo" the District of Manulierikia." Seconded by Mr. O'Regan and carried. Proposed by Mr. O'Regan, " That the Committee to be elected consist of seven members including an Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary, and that three members form a quorum." Seconded by Mr. L. G. Ryan and carried. The names of sixteen gentlemen were then placed in nomination, out of which the following seven were elected, the voting being by ballot: —Messrs Theyers, Robt. Finlay, J. Jack, Rivers, Samson, O'Regan and J. C. Thomson. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
