DUNSTAN HOSPITAL.

The third annual meeting of contributors to the Dunsiau District Hospital took place on Monday evening hist, at George's Union Hotel, Clyde, for the purpose of electing for the ensuing year fifteen members of committee, to include a President, Hon. Treasurer anil Hon. Secretary, also two auditors. Mr H. W. Robinson, President of the outgoing Committee occupied the chair. After explaining the object of the meeting, he said that the subscribers had every reason to congratulate themselves upon the success of the institution during tl.e past year, and called upon Mr Cope, the secretary, to read the annual report. The Secretary then read the following report: " In submitting this their annual report for the year commencing Ist January 1805, and ending 31st December of the same year, your committee have great pleasure in informingyouthattheinstitution is in a most efficient condition, and competent to deal with any ease whatever, even should its cure be of the most difficult nature. The building itself has been materially improved, great attention has

been paid to the internal arrangements, so as to insure the comfort of patients and strict economy in the working of the various domestic department?. Guttering has been placed round the building, and three water tanks have been procured and placed in position for storing rain and other water to the extent of 1,500 gallons. A new dead house has been built, the grounds surrounding the building have been placed under cultivation, which will effect a considerable saving of expense during the ensuing year. A. branch has been cut from the Town Race, and arrangements have been made with Mr Holt, the proprietor of the race, for a permanent supply of water. This has proved of considerable advantage, especially as regards the sanitary condition of the institution. A large and efficient cooking range has been purchased, having an attached apparatus which will supply sixty gallons of boiling water at any hour of the day or night- These additions and improvements have cost the sum of £231 0s 6d. Your Committee have worked amicably together —there has not been the slightest mis-

understanding either amongst themselves or with the officers of the institufc ,a, to which fortunate circumstance must be mainly attributed the highly satisfactory state of present affairs. Your Committee cannot too highly appreciate the exertions made by the Resident Surgeon, Dr Charles Shaw for the welfare of the institution, and the skilful treatment of patients brought under his charge. The servants of the institution also deserve great credit. They have been strictly obedient to orders and civil and obliging to the patients, whose comfort they have exerted themselves to promote. The first general meeting of subscribers for 1865 was held on Wednesday evening January 25, at the Victoria Theatre, Clyde, when the following gentlemen were elected members of commiteo—H, W. Robinson (President), J. E. Staite (Hon Treasurer), H. J. Cope, (Hon. Secretary), and Messrs Isaacs, Jacobs, Morico, Grieve, Grindley,

Barlow, Goodwin, Cambridge, Downing, Rowley, Currie, Poole. Two auditors, Messrs Harrold and Christophers, were also elected. On the 25th of September, there was a second general meeting of subscribers for the purpose of electing six members of committee in the places of Messrs Poole, Isaacs, Rowley, Jacobs Grieve and Currie, resigned. The following: gentlemen were elected—Messrs J. Jackj J. C .Thomson, Hazlett, Abel, Edwards and M'Connochie. The Committee have held 12 monthly, 6 special, and 4 adjourned meetings. The attendance has been as follows : Mr Goodwin 18 meetings „ Cambridge 18 „ „ Cope 18 „ Staite 17 „ ~ Morice 17 „ „ Barlow 17 „ jjfc,, Grindley 14 „ *%„ Downing 13 „ „ Poole 9 „ Robinson 8 „ „ Rowley 8 „ „ Hazlett 7 „ „ Jacobs 5 „ „ M'Connochie 4 „ " Thomson 4 „ „ Edwards 4 „ „ Currie 4 „ ~ Isaacs 3 „ „ Jack 2 „ Abel 1 „ „ Grieve nil " The Visiting Surgeon, Dr Charles Morice, has rendered most effectual assistance to the House Surgeon, and merits your heartiest approval. During the year there have been 112 patients admitted, which, together with 19 patients in the institution at its commencement, gives a total of 131 patients, out of which number 112 have been discharged cured or relieved, 10 have died, and 9 remain still in the institution, 75 out-patients have been cured or rel'eved, and 7 still remain on the books. The indoor patients were from the following places : —Clyde, 12; Alexandra, 30; Cromwell; 2G; Upper Manuherikia, 34; Nevis, 10. " The total disbursements "for the year amounted to £4,233 15s Bd, made up as follows :—Liabilities incurred during 1864 £1659 Is 6d. Expenditure for 1865, .£2574 14s 2d. The items are as follows :

From the Government there is due as subsidy against subscriptions £123 18s Od, which, after paying the Bank overdraft, will leave .£6 Os Od in favor of the institution.

Your Committee's term of office having now expired, they resign their trust into your hands, with the assurance that they have done their utmost to promote the interests of so valuable an instiution as the Dunstan District Hospital, and feel convinced that their successors, now that everything is in the perfect working order, will find their task an easy one to accomplish. The Tre?surer's and House Surgeon's reports were then rer.d. Proposed by Mr Marshal', "that the thanks of this meeting be g'ven to the outgoing Committee for their sewiees on behalf of the Hospital, and that the annual report be sdopted. Seconded by Mr C. Ziele, and carr:*ed unanimously/ The Chairman then vacated the chair the duties of the Committee having closed. s Mr. H. W.
