CROMWELL.
The Cromwell School Committee held n meeting on Friday, 19th January, Dr Corse in the chair. Present Messrs Shanley, Wright, Goody er, Lawrence, Thomas, Roberts (Hon Treasurer), J. Booth (Hon. Secretary).
The Treasurer furnished a statement from the formation of the school up to 31st December, 1865, showing a balance on hand at the latter date of ,£SB 4s Cd. The proceeds of the concert and Ball held on 17th January amounted to £32 19s, making the balance on hand up to date, of £9O 14s 6d. Proposed by Mr. J. Booth, " That this committee having held office since the school was founded, it is desirable that a new committee be appointed for the ensuing twelve months, and that a public meeting be held in the schoolroom on the Ist February next for iliaii purpose."
Seconded by Mr Roberts and carried. Proposed by Mr Shanley, " That the schoolmaster's half-yearly salary be paid up to the 12th February, and also that all moneys owing by the present committee be paid prior to their leaving office. Seconded by Mr Goodyer and cai - - ried -
Proposed by Mr Wright, "That all repairs be made before this committee leave office, and that the Secretary and Treasurer be empowered to order such
being done. Seconded by Mr Roberts and carried. Proposed by Mr. Shanley, seconded by Mr. Roberts, That all cheques be drawn by the Secretary and endorsed by the Treasurer or a member of the Committee. Carried.
Proposed by Mr. Wright, That as the prizes for the children had not yet been distributed, Wednesday the 24th inst. be selected for the occasion, when the Committee and the parents and friends of the pupils be invited to attend at 3 p.m. Seconded by Mr. J. Booth, and carried. A vote of thanks to the chairman con- , eluded the proceedings.
The annual examination of scholars took place on the 25th inst. A large number of the parents and friends of the children were present upon the occasion. Prizes were distributed as follows : First Class. Ist prize James Hurley 2nd do Emma Marsh 3rd do James Richards Second Class, Ist prize Joseph Wright 2nd do James Wright 3rd do William Barry 4th do John Whetter sth do (extra) Polly Kelly Third Class. Ist prize Patrick Thomas 2nd do Patrick Kelly Fourth Class. Ist prize Henry Goodyer 2nd do Katie Barry Fifth Clasp. Ist pi'ize Richard Whetter 2nd do Henry Thomas 3rd do John Barry ) , 4th do Edwd. Luscombe / equal Sixth Class. Ist prize William Marsh 2nd do James Richie Those present expressed themselves highly gratified and spoke in the highest terms of Mr Fleming, the teacher, and the proficiency to which the children had attained under his charge.
