The second annual match between these provinces was commenced on the Recreation Ground yesterday at half-past two o'clock. The captains were Wood and Knapp. The former won the toss, and decided to send Wellington to the wickets. Alpo played a good innings for 21, and Tarleton also got into double figures, but none of tho others did much, the total only reaching 100, though at one time it promised much mora. The Napier bowling was too irfsqnenuy changed at the start, and then in the middle Downes and Wood were kept too long on, tho former being tho most expense bov,Jci and every other ball averaging an ut Newton and Edwards not enough use ys made, 'and ll.e Jaftpr has the wonderful bowling average of four wiokete tor seventeen runs: he also bowled most balls for a

run. Hawke's Bay began badly, Finch, Spivey, and Martin being got rid of with the score at 22, most of which belonged to White. White and Woods kept possession of the wickets for the remainder of tho day

till time was called, despite repeated changes in the bowling. Both men on retiring were loudly cheered, tho fieldsmen joining in the applause. Nicholls kept wicket in good stylo for Wellington, but the feature of tho fielding was the magnificent in which Mr Williams acted as point, picking up and throwing in with lightning speed, at the same time covering much ground.

THE PLAY. Cox and Nicholls took their places at the wickets at half-past two, Newton bowling the first over to the former, which was a maiden.
