THE HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S BOXING DAY MEETING.

Taking it altogether the above was a success. The morning was showery and looked anything but promising, but it after- | wards cleared up and tho day was fine ; had the morning been fine no doubt more would have attended the meeting, as it was it is estimated that 2SOO persons wero on the ground. The two totalisators put through close upon £4000. The g-r.-vnd stand was not quite so well patronised as it was last year, but tho second stand was well filled. There wero no protests, and had it not been for tho extraordinary number of falls in the hurdle races, all would have gone well, but in the Handicap Hurdle raco every horse fell, and in the hack hurdle race all but the winner fell. There were a great many remarks made about the height of the hurdles, but they were the same as have always been used, but the pace made was fast, and the ground was rather heavy. The first race of the meeting was the MAIDEN PLATE, Of 50 soys.; 1 mile ; weight for ago. S. 11. Gollan's b h Oberon, 4-j rs (Robertson) .. .. . • • • .. 1 W. Douglas' br g Jacob, 4 yrs (A. Woods)' °- New York was scratched. After tho first half mile Oberon had the lead, and won rather comfortably by two lengths. On the inside totalisator 'there were 25 tickets on each horse. Dividend, £1 16s; on the outside one the dividend was £1 14s. Time, 1 mm. 52 sec. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, Of 100 soys. ; once round. Capt. Russell's br f Tigrodia, 3 yrs, Sst, (Mr Tagsat) 1 W. The horses got away to a very bad start, Yankee and Miss Dargon having all tho best of it, and Abraham and Deceiver the worst. At the back of tho course Yankee was still leading, Miss Dargon second, Tigrcdia third, and Deceiver last. At the railway bend Tigrediaran into second place, and when half way down the strait took the lead from Yankee and won rather easily by two lengths. Time, lmin. Dividend on both totalisators £1 10s.

HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, Of 100 soys.; about 2 miles. T. Gilpin's eh g Pastime, list (E. Gilpin) .. .. .. .. .. 1 Iraia Karaurai's b g Tawhara, 9st 71b (Cleary) 0 F. This race was a chapter of accidents, every horse in the race falling. Assegai fell at the second hurdle, True Blue at the third, and then Wild Dayrell was the next to fall. Pastime, who had" a strong lead, fell at the last hurdle but one from home, and then Tawhara took tho lead, but E. Gilpin was quickly on his horse again, and went in chase. At the last hurdle Tawhara fell, and Pastime cantered in. Dividend, inside £4 lis, outside £4 10s. HACK HURDLE RACE, Of 20 cots ; no weight under lOst, U miles. For this race seven horses started, and again falling was the order of the day, for every horse except tho winner fell. Tailor, the winner, is a stable companion of Pastime, and was ridden by E. Gilpin. Dividend, inside £3 lis, outside £3. HASTINGS HANDICAP, Of 250 soys., second horse to receive 25 soys. from the stakes ; distance, 2.j- miles. P. Martin's b c Foreruuner, 3yrs, 7st 31b (Hickey) 1 W. Douglas' blk f Christina, 3yrs, 6st 71b (A. Woods) 2 Captain Russell's eh m Leonora, syrs, 9st 01b (Edwards) 3 Ihaia's b g The Laird, oyrs, 7st 101b (Smith) 0 W. Ruddick's br h Emir Bey, syrs, Sst 81b (Quinn) ~0 —Tigredia and Deceiver wero scratched. Forerunner was the first to show in front, and led past the stand the first time, followed by The Laird, Christina, Emir Bey, and Leonora. They kept this order until at the back of the course, when Christina took the lead, which she kept for another round, all following in tho same order, Leonora still last. At tho railway bend Leonora began to go up, and Forerunner closed upon Christina. In entering the straight Forerunner was alongside Christina," and Leonora was third. Half way down the straight for home Forerunner took the lead and won by a length from Christina, Leonora two lengths behind Christina. Time, 4min 22sec. Dividendinside, £3 12s; outside, £3 3s.

HACK RACE, Of 20 soys, catch weights, 1 mile. Eleven horses started, and _ New York won, Lorelia being second. Dividend, £3.

CONSOLATION HANDICAP, Of 50 soys, 1 mile. Deceiver (Hickey), 7st 3lb Miss Dargon (C. Lagor), Gst 51b

Yankee (Griffiths), 7st Gib .. .. 3 Emir Boy (McTaggart), Sst 51b. —Yankee and Miss Dargon took the lead. At the back of the course Miss Dargon had the lead, followed by Yankee, Deceiver and Emir Bey whipping in. At the railway bend Deceiver closed up, and when in tbe straight had the lead, which ho kept to the finish, winning by two lengths. Dividend inside, £3 3s ; outside, £4 2s. Time, lmin. 50secs. Capt. Russell, I believe, intends to send Tigredia to Auckland to-day, to try her luck in the Auckland Derby. This will make a stir in the bettinjr market.
