Mrs Frances Wordsworth, known as the heroine of the.Crozets, she being the only female who escaped at the wreck of the Strathmore, and who for many months participated in the hardships and suffering of the survivors until rescued, died on Saturday evening, aged 58

The charge of indecent assault on tho boy William Chadwin, of Maungaturoto, preferred against Abraham Ridings, late Congregational clergyman at Maungaturoto, came up on remand on Saturday. Superintendent Thomson said he had received a telegram from Maungaturoto stating that five distinct charges of a similar nature, supported by ample evidence, would be laid against prisoner. Ridings was remanded until Tucsdaj •*, his bail being enlarged. Mr Humphreys, secretary to the Northern Shipping Company, died on Saturday from blood poisoning caused by eating pork. His predecessor died of a similar cause .a few weeks previously. William Baker had his arm fractured by a cricket ball in the domain on Saturday.

CnRiSTcniTRCH, This day., A telegram was received in port on Saturday morning, statiug that Edward Houghton, chief of the barquentine Jasper of the C.W.T., was washed overboard and drowned, on the passage from Mauritius to Port Chalmers. Houghton was woll known and respected in Lyttelton. -He has occupied the position of chief officer in the abovo named line of vessels for sometime. The youngest son of James Allan, of Hope Hill, Taieri, on returning from rabbit shooting on Saturday attempted to fire off the remaining cartridge, but missed : fire twice and then sat down holding his gun in-a perpendicular position in-.-order.-•-to extract the cartridge which suddenly ; exploded, he received the charge -in the, left cheek, !tho bone being- broken and ear carried away. ■•• .
