STATE LANDLORDISM.
[To 'litis Editor of the Daily Telegraph.] Sir,—ln your yesterday's issue you «aid as an objection to tho nationalization of tho larfd. that "thero was never a more unscrupulous landlord than the State," and that " the nationalisation of tho land might prove a leap from the frying-pan into the fire." This looks to me as an attempt to throw dust into the people's eyes. Unscrupulousness is not a thing to be afraid of, , if justice accompanies it. The injustice of private ownership in land, and the evil that , follows it, are tho grounds on which its , nationalisation is claimed. Paying rent to tho State is different to paying rent to private individuals. Rent paid to the latter for the use of the land is virtually so much thrown away. It is all unproductive!}' ' squandered. Rent paid to the State goes to save other taxes, and to como back to , the people in the shape of improvements. Thus tho " unemployed " problem is solved ; money wasted in land speculation is put into use, and the game is a thing of the, past. Does ~V look like a leap from the frying-pp . the fire?
