SPORTING NOTES.

[By " Hippo."! No less than 21 horses paid up last Saturday for the New Zealand Cup, and 9 for the Derby. Liverpool still continues a hot favorite for the Derby, but Trenton has been backed by his owner to beat him for places. Since this became known Trenton has been backed more freely. He has been taken in a lot of doubles witli Vanguard, Welcome Jack, Tasman, Sou'wester, Nelson, and several Hawke's Bay sports have taken him with the local mare Leonora, whose price in tho latest reports for the Cup is-12 to 1. Liverpool and his stable companion Welcome Jack, have been backed for the double. The Canterbury Cup ft w.f.a. race has received 13 entries, and amongst them is Leonora. If she has a show at w.f.a. with the cracks, she must have a very much better one in the New Zealand Cup, as she will meet Welcome Jack; Tasm.in, Nelson, Liverpool, Trenton, and others at a ' stone and more better terms, and there is only a quarter of a mile difference in the distance, the handicap race being 2 miles, and the Canterbury Cup 2 j miles. There would be great rejoicing in Hawke's Bay if the buff and black colors wore the first past the post iv either of these races. The final payment for both the N.Z. Cup and Derby takes place on .Saturday, when most likely a few more will drop out of the Cup, but if all goes well I think all the Derby candidates will go to the post. All the'local horses that are engaged -in the Petane races are doing and going well, with the exception- of Blackbird, who has taken an objection to jumping, arid even Mahar's persuasive powers were not sufficient to induce him to negotiate his fences kindly. For the Potano Maiden Plato I' see that Miss Dargon is entered. Tins must bo mistake, as she is not eligible for it, having won a race of over 25 soys. at Gisborne.
