WAIROA.
[from our own correspondent.] Mr* Piper has sent away this season from Lore 9000 hop sets, GOOO to Mr Benjamin, of Hastings, and 3000 to Mr Gately, Gisborne. Mr Tanner has sent up for GOOO sets, but was too late to have it filled. Mr Piper will have about 25,000 sets to dispose of next season. Evidently Hastings people mean to go in for hops. Every farmer should have an acre or two, and if they were well cultivated they would be certain to bring in a good return. One roast house would do for a largo district. Wonders will never cease, surely ! The Clyde-Frasertown telephone line has been given preference to tho Tolago Bay- Gisborno line. We are thankful for small mercies, and tho connections of Clyde and Frasertown by telephone will bo a great advantage to the business people at Frascrtown especially. The Town Board held its last meeting on Monday, 15th instant. The iiuaneial statement showed assets £31 2s, and liabilities £32 5s sd, showing a surplus of £1 16s 7d. The total receipts were £222 4s 2d, and the total expenditure £234 12s Bd. There is, therefore, an overdraft of £12 Ss Gd at the Bank of New Zealand. Considering that the Board started with an overdraft of £100 matters have been very well managed indeed. The clerk reported that tho Government had not yet paid the rates duo on Crown and native lands in the town district. It was decided to make a fresh application for the same. Mr 11. Nairn, of Liston, has been energetically canvassing tho district for funds for the erection of an Anglican Church at Frasertown. The Native Land Court is "drawing out its slow length." From the Guardian I learn that tho Kahuitara No. 2 subdivision case has been settled, tho land being divided between the original owners and Messrs Duff Bros., who have purchased a good many of tho shares. Tho Hiniwhaki block, of a few hundred acres, near Terihi, on the north side of tho Waivoa river, near the township, was heard on Monday, 15th. The land is claimed by Hone Ngarara and party, Tiopoia Kaukau leading tho counter claimants. Mr A. Poyzer, tho contractor for the Waihua bridge, is evidently "taking time by the forelock." Ho lias within fourteen days got 13,000 feet of totara cut and .stacked in the" Tikokino bush near Hainpdeu. The Town Board election took pla.;o on tho 17th, and resulted in tho return of Messrs Mayo, Powdrell, G. B. Flint, Parker, and Large. The defeated candidates were Messrs Smyth and Steer. The Napier Hospital fracas of a recent date is talked about here somewhat, and the general opinion seems to be that Mr Knowlcs has not received that support from the members to which the chairman of a public body is entitled.
