Our report and the prize list of the Poultry Association's show will be found on the fourth page A letter from tho Rev. Do Berdt Hovell is unavoidably crowded out of this issue, but will appear in our next. The Municipal Finance Committee was to have met this morning, but owing to tho unavoidable absence of Crs. Hansen and to J. Widerup, of Norsewood. The weather-glass being set fair, and tho streets smothered in dust, it was not surprising that there was no appearance of the water-cart to-day. Perhaps the authorities will take this as a hint. The Young Women's Mutual Help Association -will meet this evening at 8 o'clock, at S. Cosgrove's Spanish cock, that has taken first and special prizes, was bred by Mr Cranny, and reared by the exhibitor, who, unfortunately, was unable to show its sisters, which are good birds, but would have been disqualified owing to their wings having been clipped to prevent trespassing in a garden. Tho " Salvation Army " made a demonstration in force last night down Carlyle street. A large crowd accompanied, and in fact formed, the procession. The detachment announced its colors by the singing of hymns, which were rendered none the more melodious by tho derisive accompaniments of the unconverted. The Hawke's Bay electoral roll has been added to by the registration of 147 names since the late election. On the Waipawa roll 120 names have been added, and 30 have been put on tho Napier roll. All these names were received by the Registrar too late for registration before the issue of the writs for the general elections.
We have received some more correspondence from the Western Spit anent licensed fishermen, cockles, and "Tommy Spectacles," but as these letters seem to show that there is more of a neighbors' quarrel desired to be made public than a wish to argue out a question of some general interest, we decline to publish them.

It may be accepted as' a gratifying sign of the times when three troops of cavalry volunteers can be disbanded. The two troops of Waikato cavalry formed a splendid force, and the Hawera troop has done good service in its time. It is to be hoped that New Zealand settlers will never again find it necessary to band together for purposes of defence against the natives of this country.
There was no sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning.

We hear from Taupo that Mr Jack Loffley, the well-known guide and bath proprietor at Tapuaeharuru, was brutally assaulted by four men on Tuesday night. This outrage was committed close to the hotel there. Loffley was knocked down, dragged along the road, and kicked about the head and body The following morning he was enabled to proceed by the coach to Taupo, where he received medical attention. Loffley is by no means a young man, and can ill stand such treatment, but a few years ago it would have taken all that four men could do to have used him in the manner described. It is to be hoped the ruffians will be discovered.
A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Messrs. Batten and Oliver, who have been adjudicated bankrupts on creditors' petition, was held at the Supreme Court-house at 11.30 a.m. to-day. There was a good number of creditors present, the majority of whom had failed to prove their debts, and consequently they could not take any part in the proceedings. Mr F. W. Garner, the Assignee, informed the meeting that Batten's whereabouts could not be ascertained, and that James Oliver had failed to attend the meeting when summoned for adjudication, and that he had failed to file a statement of his liabilities and assets as provided for by the Act. In fact he had, in his opinion, wilfully absented himself from the present meeting, although he (the Assignee) had been to considerable trouble and expense in going to Waipawa, and getting a summons served on Oliver at Porangahau to attend, The creditors Avere rather severe in their remarks respecting the conduct of Oliver. The Assignee notified that a few minutes prior to the meeting he had received a telegram, stating that Oliver would arrive in town at 2 p.m. Tho meeting was adjourned until 2 p.m. on Monday next.
