THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
Auckland, This day.
An immense number of new names are being placed on the electoral rolls in view of the elections. The total number of new electors who have registered in the City districts for the three days is 1000. Mr T. B. Hill has declined to contest Waipa. Mr Richard Udy is being brought out against Mr Tole for Eden. Mr Swanson is expected to run against Mr Dargavillc for City AVest. Dr. Erson is out for Franklin North. Thames, This day. Messrs Speight and Eraser are definitely announced as candidates for the Thames seat. The former intimates his intention of running absolutely free from all existing political parties. Messrs M'GoAvan, M'Cullough, and Bagnall are also mentioned as possible candidates. New Plymouth, This day. Sir Julins Vogel telegraphs the folloAving reply to a requisition asking him to stand for Ncav Plymouth:—" I am greatly flattered by your cordial requisition. lam unable, hoAvcvcr, to accept it as I have determined to stand for Christchurch. Permit me also to add that it Avould have been painful to me to stand against my old supporter, Mr Kelly, avlio has represented your district many years.—Julius Vogel." AVellington, This day. Mr Thomas Mason announces that ho Avill seek re-election for the Hutt.
Christchurch, This day
Mr A. P. O'Callaghan intends to seek reelection for Lincoln. Mr Oliver AVansey announces that ho will stand for Stanmore. Mr Joynt's address to the South Christchurch electors is published. He agrees in the main with the utterances of Sir Julius Vogel. A telegram from Sir Julius A r ogel has been published, stating that he withdraws from all districts except that of Christchurch North. A requisition is being signed asking Mr Ruddcnklau, Mayor of Christchurch, to stand for Stanmore. It is understood that ho will accept the invitation. Mr J. P. Jamicson is likely to contest the same electorate.
Oamaru, This day. Mr Duncan Sutherland is out for the Country of AVaitaki, and Mr Thos. Proctor, tho present Mayor, is out for the borough. It is probable that Mr S. Y. Duncan Avill stand again for the county, and Mr Shrimski for the borough. Ross, This day. For tho Hokitika seat Mr Fitzgerald will be opposed by Mr Grimmond and Mr Bevan.
