DEADLOCK BETWEEN SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS AND MINISTER OF LANDS.
Dunedin, This day. A deadlock has occurred between tho school commissioners and the Minister of Lands as to the disposal of the education reserves at Waikaia. The commissioners resolved to sell them one-third for cash and two-thirds on deferred payments. The Minister of Lands suggested they should reconsider their decision and dispose of the lands under the perpetual leasing system, their absolute sale being in his opinion opposed to the spirit in Avhich tho reserves were made. The commissioners have resolved to adhere to their former decision, and have written to the Ministers pointing out that the Legislature gave them freedom of action Avithin certain limits, but that this freedom is a delusion and a mockery if an imperious Minister of Lands is entitled to censure them and frustrate their efforts to secure the industrial occupation of the waste lands. They hope Mr Rolleston will forego his private opinion and gavo effect to the recommendations of the local administration.
