THE COLLECTION FOR St. PATRICK'S COLLEGE.

[To the Editor op tick Daily Telegram.] Sic, —My apologies arc due to you for having unwittingly been the cause of inflicting upon your readers the fem'ful and wonderful effusions of that rampant hulla-bulloo Mr " Diarmid." Surely lie is an Irishman, and I have trod on the tail of his coat ! You will remember, Sir, I ventured the remark, or rather hazarded the opinion, that it was little short of a scandalous .shame that, by the oratory of the pulpit—priestly influence, if " Diarmid " likes the phrase better—poor servant girls had been induced to give out of their earnings a much larger subscription than very many of their employers could have afforded for such a problematical benefit as a St. Patrick's College at Wellington. I thought that, for a town like Napier, a sum approaching £100 to come out of the pockets of a single congregation was a little " too-to." And in spite of everything that "Diarmid" has said I think so still. I shall not trouble you again on this subject. Before concluding allow me to thank "Mistress " for her seasonable and sensible letter. That lady would no doubt have written again but for the fear of having hoaped upon her the foul abuse that has been levelled at mo by that " tarc-an'-ounds " scribbler "Diarmid."—l am, &c, X. Napier, May 27, 18 84. [Would it suit "Diarmid" and "X" to be introduced to each other? They could then fly at each other's throats without further troubling our readers.—Ed. D.T.j
