WAIROA.

Tfroji our own correspondent.] 1 April 28,

I erred somewhat in my last letter in giving the probable cost of the proposed bridge over the Wairoa at £15,000. I should have said £8000, that being Mr Bold's estimate of tho cost of the work. The agitation is progressing very rapidly, and I have no doubt now that if the ratepayers (a majority of whom are favorable) can induce the County Council to go in for what is undoubtedly a useful work, and one that will be reproductive, the Government can scarcely refuse to grant the sum asked for under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. May 1. At the R.M. Court on Monday a man named Darcy, but bearing several nlla.ics, was convicted of stealing a dog, value £5, the property of Henry Hunt. Prisoner s defence was that he left the Wairoa for Mohaka under the influence of liquor, and that the dog followed him to Waikare, he being unable to get rid of it. The prosecution, however, proved that prisoner was sober, and that lie offered the dog for sale to a native. He was fined £4 10s, or a month's imprisonment in Napier gaol. As the fine was not forthcoming the prisoner had to " take it out" in gaol. Mr Hugh McLean (late of the Puterc) left hero with his family this week for Maraekiikaho. Government " inspections " as a rule are very hurriedly carried out, and the Constabulary Department is no exception to the rule. Major Scanncll arrived here on Monday, and' inspected the "force,' , and left again the same afternoon for Napier. °Tho Guardian says that at a late meeting of tho Town Board "an account was presented frsm the Government Stationery Department for £1 8s 6d, with a request that the account, accompanied with cheque for amount, should be returned as speedily as possible. The account was for copies of Local Government Acts applied for by the Board. One would fancy the Heaven-sent Administration now in office would have supplied these Acts free to struggling local bodies like the Clyde Town Board." The events for tho forthcoming regatta comprise a whaleboat race, handicap sculling race, Maori canoe race for two women, pair-oar handicap race, two sailing races, one for boats and the other for canoes, and a "Kopaua" race (small canoes with one native.) At the regatta committee meetingMr J. W. Sargisson was appointed secretary, Mr Porter treasurer, Messrs Mcßoberts and Webber handicappers, and Messrs Eraser, Lambert, and Peakman members of committee. The Town Board met on Monday mght. Letters were read from the Town Boards of Opunakc, Featherston, and Manaia, re cattle trespass, the gist of the advice being to impound tho stray cattle off the roads. Tenders were ordered to be called for several works. It was decided to hold a special meeting on the 12th to consider the balance-

sheet. You would confer a groat favor on the towns people and others if you would kindly publish the subjoined statement in connection with the proposed bridge over the Wairoa rivers : ESTIMATE OP COST, AND REVENUE OF THE WAIHOA BRIDGE.
