WAIROA.
[FROM OUR OAVN CORRESPONDENT.] April 23. On dit that Mr Allan McDonald's party have asked him not to resign his seat for the East Coast. The news is satisfactory from one point of viow at least, and that is, Mac. Avill be ono more vote against tho Government, when tho dying struggle comes ou. Mr Thomas Peddio, of your toAvn, has sold his property at To Mara Maru, at a satisfactory prico, to Messrs Lcdward and Fisher, Avho intend, I hear, to reside hero. Tho local paper of tho 23 instant states tho trout ova planted by Captain Prceco in Waikaro Tahoko and its tributary some time ago havo survived their many enemies, and have now attained a considerabls size. Many of them havo been seen lately leaping in tho pools of the Waikaro Taheke by settlers and others, living in the vicinity of that river. This -will be good news for those votaries of tho piscatorial art, tho fly iisbers. A meeting of native* took place nt the Court-house on Saturday to nominate three natives to ait on the Native Committee for this district. Toha, Kerei, and Hamana wore nominated for Wairoa. Mohaka has nominated Urupcnc Taimai, and the collective Avisdom of the Wairoa, Hawke's Bay County Waipawa, and East Taupo Counties will sit in Napier, I believe. What a farce this. The Government, that should endeavor to bring the two races under tho one law, actually sets up an organisation
distinct from the European law court. We shall have separate local government for the Maoris soon, and perhaps a Native Parliament if tho Continuous Ministry can manage to retain the reins of office long enough. A fairly attended meeting took place at tho Clyde Hotel on Saturday night to tako steps towards organising a regatta and sports hero on tho Queen's Birthday. It was decided to do so, and a committee Avas appointed to draw up a programme and carry out the affair. A sum of nearly £14 was'subscribed in tho room. " Fersides " (whoever that individual may be), in the Wairoa Guardian, publishes tho following : —" Here is a little sum in arithmetic for somo ono to do: —If it costs the county £-1 lGs to elect one native assessor for Clyde, and £4 17s to elect another for Erasertown, what is the valuo of each assessor to the county if it costs only £2 10s to elect five ordinary European members for each of the above-mentioned districts, and if one native assessor is equal ta five Europeans." Mr H. J. Williams has obtained ono month's leave of absence from the County Council. His post is temporarily filled by Mr J. S. Taylor, Tc Kapu. A mcctimr of the Turirua ratepayers Avill be held on" Tuesday, May Gth, under the Public Works Act, to consider tho question of closing a road leading to tho Hurumua Creek, and opening another in its place. I am informed, by private telegram from Auckland, that the s.s. Wairoa, recently launched, Avill bo ready to leave that port for hero in three weeks.
