THE COLLISION BETWEEN THE WAIRARAPA AND ADELAIDE.
Dunedin, Thin day. Tho Wairarapa has sustained serious damage to her port quarter through the steamship Adelaide colliding with her. The port quarter of the Wairarapa was indented, and her poop deck raised up, caused by the beam end being forced up considerably out of position, and the bolts in the iron upper deck in the second saloon arc started. It appears that the Wairarapa left seven minutes before the Adelaide, and was going at, half speed. She was followed by the Adelaide, whioh was being pushed to such an extent that flames fully six feet high were issuing from her funnel. Upon entering the narrow part of tho west channel the Wairarapa kept on her course and the Adelaide struck her on the port quarter, causing her to heel over on her beam end. Thero seems to have been considerable confusion on board the Adelaide, and one of
her passengers jumped on board tho Wairarapa. The passengers interviewed here state that no blame is attached to Captain Chatfield, and that iv their opinion the boats were not racing. Some other passengers, however, give altogether a different account of the collision. They assert that there undoubtedly was a race, and that the Wairarapa waited below Williamstown for the Adelaide to come up to her. It was fully known on board that a race was intended.
An enquiry was hold at Port Chalmers yesterday, before Mr Hackworth, Collector of Customs, and Captain Thompson, nautical assessor, into the collision between the Wairarapa aud the Adelaide. The evidence of Captain Chatfield, of the chief officer, of the chief and third engineers, aud of Mr Pakcr, a passenger, was taken. These all stated that there was no sign of racing, and the passenger said he had no idea the boats were racing. The quartermaster of the Wairarapa, who was also examined, said he thought the Adelaide intended to drive the Wairarapa over on to the bank. The enquiry stands adjourned for the evidence of Captain Cameron, the Union Company's inarino superintendent.
