Thpre is said to have been an amusing mistake in the draft bill for constituting a federal council that has been sent home for the inspection and criticism of tho Crown law officers. Tho preamble, it is reported, states that the bill is to bo passed by tho Queen "with tho advice of the Lords, spiritual and temporal," and all mention of tho House of Commons has been omitted. And yet there were seven lawyers members of the Federation Convention !
A man of tho name of Donkin was discovered yostorday hung , and dead. We have no particulars beyond that tho locality was Kaitoke, near Tahoraite. Whether he was found hanging from a tree, or from the raftera of hie icliare; whether ho hung himself, or was lynohed, it is impossible to Bay. Probably it is another caeo added to tho long list of suicides while in a state _of temporary insanity brought on by excessive indulgence in alcoholic ]i<jugr.

' News has been received of the destruction by fire of the Wanstcad Hotel yesterday at noon. It appears that tho proprietor, Mr D. Moroney, find his wife, were absent at Waipawa, and that thero wore prosent in the houso at tho time Mr P. Moroney and young McGreevy, tho son of the owner of the property. It was thelatterwhodiscoverd the fire, the roof near the chimney being in flames. McGreevy at once got on the roof and endeavored to extinguish the fire, nor did he relax his efforts until he had to desist to preserve his life. Tho only thing saved was a piano. The stock and furniture were insured for .£250, and the building for £500, in tho South British office, but half the latter amount had been reinsured in the National office.
The Lyttolton Times gives the following extract from a private letter received by last mail from Kn<rland: — " I saw some mutton ](i>t Saturday in Leadenhall market ticketed "New Zealand mutton," and was told on inquiry that it was ex Catalonia. lam perfectly sure it was not Ni w Zealand mutton at all, nn it was very small, very poor looking, and very dark in appearance. It was so bad altogether, that I am sure you, for instance, would not have had it on your table at all. or an} r one else who could afford better. What yon want is shops under the management of the Freezing Company, to retail the real Now Zealand article. It must do the trade an immense amount of harm for any butcher to havo the power to ticket anything ho likes as New Zealand mutton ; and this will always bo the case until reliablo men are provided to sell nothing elsy but tho real thing. Surely some such arrangement could easily bo mado."
At the South IVI'-lbourno Police Court on the 10th, Samuel Nathan, furniture dealer, of Bourke-street, again appoared on a charge of aiding and abetting certain disorderly person:? by letting a furnished house to them. Evidence was given to provo that the house was frequented by immoral characters, to the annoyance and disgust of the neighbourhood. The Chairman of the Bench said the magistrates were unanimous in considering the case fully proved. They considered the offence a very serious one, which must be put a stop to. The community was being demoralised, and young men were being rendered unfit to pottle down in their own homos. The Bench, thoreforo, ordered the defendant to bo imprisoned and kept to hard labour for twelve months. Tho decision was received with cheers, which were suppressed. Notice of appeal was immediately given on behalf of Nathan, who is the owner of a large timopayment furniture warehouse, doing an extensive business. Tho case against Walter Finaway, Nathan's clerk, wan withdrawn.

in the Supreme Court at Laune°ston Charles Edward Rolston was charged with having assaulted Mr Arkenhead, one of the proprietors of the Examiner, with intent to do him bodly harm. The assault appeared, writes a Tasmania,!! contemporary, to have been committed in conso'juence of a paragraph which was published in the prosecutor's journal, stating - that the prisoner had been assaulted by the father of ayounglady with whom theprisonerbad run away. The jury fouud the prisoner guilty of common assault, and the Judge fined him £50, an order which created a considerable amount of surprise. Ah Rolston's friends are known to be wealth}', the fine was at once paid.
They have gone so far with the Jordan Valley canal project as to estimate its cost at £2-22,700,000 at. the very least., and Great Britain has been asked for eiirht millions as a start. The Sultan of Turkey is said to favor tho Jordan canal (says an English paper), under certain conditions and restrictions. He wishes to secure his hold on Palestine better than he did on Egypt by making concessions in tho Suez Canal business. But the cost of a Jordan canal is so stupendous that it is not likely Europe will face it, especially as the capital invested would be sunk out of sight for a century or more, and no one living could hope to realise anything from such an investment.

A new lnolo-dramatic comic opera, entitled "Captain KirM, or tho Bold Buccaneer," music by Mr F. Solomon, mid tho libretto by Mr G. H. Abbott, has been played for the first time at the lYinco of Willis's Theatre, Liverpool. Both music and libretto are said to have failed to make any impression upon the audience. Since its production, however, the piece is said to have undergone considerable alteration.
A correspondent of the London Telegraph asserts tJi.it the "golden apple" of the Old Testament is undoubtedly tlio apricot of Cyprus. The references in the Old Testament apply, in all re.spncts, to this fruittree alone.
