THE ANNIVERSARY OF CANTERBURY.

The thirty-third anniversary of the province was commemorated to-day by a general holiday and various festivities. The weather was beautifully tine. Tho public attractions included the opening of the exhibition, Caledonian sports in Hagley Park, horso races at Amberley, excursions by steamer to Akaroa and Pigeon Bay, aud a pyrotechnic display by the Fire Brigades at Hagley Park in the evening.
The Caledonian games were very successful, over 2000pers.ns being present. The weather was delightful. The five-mile walking handicap was won by G. Speight, with 700 yards handicap; G. Umblison, 750 yards, 2; J. M. O'Connor, scratch, 3. Time, -lOjinins.
