A BURGLAR PURSUED BY LADS.
An extraordinary affair is reported to havo occurred in Camberwcll. A lady named Mrs Cuining, living at No. 77, Grove-lane, Camberwell, was in tho ground floor front room of her house, at about half-past G on Friday night, when she heard a noise at her bedroom window, and upon looking out she saw a mnn, dressed in dark clothes, standing on a ladder which had boon loft there by some painters, with a crowbar, or "jcininy," in his hand. She instantly raised an alarm, and the would - bo burglar at once slipped down to tho bottom of the ladder, and ran away as fast as ho could. Ho had, however, been noticed by a party of eight or nine lads, most of •whom were provided with sticks. They Boon brought the burglar to bay. They then set upon him with their sticks, and endeavoured to hold him. Ho broke away, and finding that the boys wore in no way deterred from their purpose, ho halted for a moment and hurled a "jemmy"—a formidable instrument with a sharp end—■ into their midst. Fortunately no one was hurt and tho chase was continued. Coming once more to close quarters, the man was severely boat/;u by the boys with their sticks, blood flowing down his face profusely. Matters now became desperate, and to defend himself the burglar drew two largo knives. This rather frightened the lads, avlio for a moment drew back, and tho burglar, thus obtaining a fair start, ran down Do Crespigny Park. When again brought to bay lie lost his hat, and ran into the garden of No. 13. Tho occupier, thinking tho lads wore ill-treating tho man, whoso faco was covered with blood, shut tho gate. Seizing tho opportunity, tho burglar jumped over a side wall, and has not since been seen or hoard of.
