GENERAL M'IVOR.
A gentleman who is acquainted wiih General M'lvor, whoso name has lately been freely used in connection with an expedition to Now Guinea, gives the Auckland Herald Bomo information about him. Tho general is a " soldier of fortune." Tie has fought in many campaigns, and on as many different sides as his countryman, Dugald Dalgetta, but ho has about him a chivalrous nnd adventurous spirit which was wholly Wanting to the champion who had learned "war under Gustavus Adolphus. General M'ivor is a tall, strong, determined-looking man, getting on now towards .">0 years of ago, and who has participated in almost every campaign of recent times, Ho first fought with "Garibaldi in 1809, and after Italy was freed he went out. t<> America, casting his lot in with the Confederates. Ile •was in must of tho great battles of that continent, and when (he Confederate cause finally collapsed by the surrender of General Lee, General M'ivor returned to England. After a brief spell, he plunged into the JY.inco-Prussiiin war, again on tho losing side. Ho liked, however, to help what he considered the weaker party. The surrender of Paris finished that business and the next •work in hand for General M'ivor was tho Russo-Turkish war, when ho aided tho Sultan agninst the Colossus of tho North. There is nt present no very lively prospect for a war in which he can take part, and so General M'ivor, who cannot live without adventure, desires to lead an expedition to Now Guinea. In all probability he would havo been successful in raising a force of young, daring fellows, who could have done anything if the climate had not been too much for them. But the British Government have taken a determined stand to begin ■with, and in all probability will bo successful in stopping tho whole project.
