I AVo learn that an enquiry Avill be hold at the Custom House to-morrow morning, before tlio Collector of Customs, as to tho cause of tho recent fatal boat accident at tho Spit. It Avas adjourned till Wednesday next, at 2 p.m. The Napier Fire Brigade will have a wet practice to-night Avith the steam engine on Clive Square. AYe aro glad that tho Superintendent of the Brigade has adopted our suggestion to notify these Avet practices, so as to prevent persons needlessly risking a ducking.
A very noticeable improvement has been made in the reading-room of the Athenaeum, tho AA'hole of tho books of reference being noAv placed in a commodious case over tho magazine table. Amongst the number are several most useful and valuable works of reference, and their hcav arrangement -will doubtless prove of the greatest convenience to members of tho institution.

The next sittings of tho Supreme Court in Napier will commence on Monday, tho 26th instant, instead of the second week in December, as usual. There is only ono criminal case set down for hearing, but it is i expected the civil sittings aro likely to occupy about a fortnight longer. Mr Justice Richmond will probably be the presiding Judge, but this will not be definitely settled until the meeting of the Appeal Court. It is notified by an Order in Council, dated the 2nd instant, that all dogs imported into New Zealand, except from tho Australian colonies, are required to undergo a quarantine of six months' duration No dog is to bo landed in Noav Zealand except at tho following ports :—AVellington, Auckland, Napier, Nelson, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Bluff harbour. AYe hear that tho Rabbit Suppression Committee will shortly make another "call" of a farthing a-head on the flocks of tho sheepfarmers. The voluntary subscriptions amount to little more than sufficient to erect three miles of fencing. It is obvious that, if rabbits arc to be fenced out, a longer distance than that will be necessary. Having begun the work it Avould be Avorso than foolish to abandon it. The expense of tho boundary fence is nothing, not a drop in the bucket, compared to Avhat it is designed to save. If all the sheepfarmers iv the province were to pay a shilling a-hoad per sheep to keep rabbits out it would bo money in their pockets. A case of a very painful character occupied the attention of tho Resident Magistrate this morning, Avhen a young girl named Rose Ayers, about fifteen years of age, was charged with lunacy. The defendant is the daughter of the poor woman Amy Ayers, who died in the asylum last Aveok. From the evidence of Mr Alexander BroAvno it appeared that the girl had been in his employment for the last nine months, and during that time sho had had several attacks of a more or less violent character. Last night sho appeared to become quite wild, and continued screaming for about half-an-hour, when Mr BroAvne, becoming alarmed, sent for the police. On his opening the door of her room she behaved very violently, and threw a boot at him. It appears'the girl has some time since been in v the asylum for three months, and the death of her mother last Aveek, according to Mr BroAvnc's evidence, seems to have completely upset her. She Avas remanded for three days for medical examination. Tho London correspondent of the Sydnoy Morning Herald says :—" It would bo much better, and save an immense amount of trouble, if the New Zealand shippers could arrange either to pack their sheep in separate lots, according to the numbers on the labels; or, better'still, for the shippers to send larger quantities at ono time, and so lessen tho number of shippers in each boat. This Avould save a lot of delay and unnecessary trouble, which consignees are continually having Avith the Dock Company, who seem to be getting tired of settling claims for missing sheep and wrong dolivery."
According to their religious creeds, the earth's population of 1,443,000,000 is_ thus classified by the German statisticians: 212,000,000 Catholics, 121,000,000 Protestants, 84,000,000 Schismatics, 7,000,000 Israelites, 200,000,000 Mohamcdans, 103,000,000 Brahmins, 423,000,000 Buddhists, and 230,000,000 ragans. The number of Christians aggregate, therefore, 420,000,000; tho worshippers of one God are less than one-half of the inhabitants of tho earth, and 838,000,000 arc given to idolatry. The foregoing statistics reveal >tho extraordinary fact that the Catholic religion has only 4,000,000 Avorshippcrs more than the other Christian confessions.
Canon Chalmers, of Geelong,_ has been preaching against the methods of the Salvation Army. Ho Avas specially severe iv his discourse on the way in which the Army deals Avith young children. He said: "Children arc easily excited; many of them arc pleased to thrust themselves into notice and make themselves objects_ of interest, and it seems to me that nothing can be more adapted to destroy the virtues of tho childish character—l mean reverence, humility, teachableness, obedience — than tho methods of the Army. I knoAV nothing more likely to raise up in our midst a host of forward, pretentious, though perhaps unconscious, little hypocrites, ignorant of tho very first principles of true religion. By tho novelty, tho excitement, tho chorussinging, the banner-waving, of Salvationist gatherings, children are specially liable to bo attracted, and I Avould urge on tho parents of this congregation not to allow their children to attend the Army's meetings, even to gratify their curiosity, or suffer them in any Avay to come under its influence. Of this thcy_ may rest assured—no good can come of it iv the long run."
According to the Medical Times and Gazette, there arc thirty-four or thirty-five total abstinence men iv the English House of Commons.
The total annual trade between the United Kingdom, Mauritius and British India, Avith Madagascar, is computed at a million stery ling, Avhilo that of France is not more than one-third of that sum.
It is claimed that AVolfe's Schnapps is not intoxicating, on the ground that an ordinary draught Avill produce such a grateful exhilaration that only ho who is bent on bcsolinent Avould crave excessive indulgence in it.—[Advt.]
