AYe learn from tho New Zealand Herald that with the* steamer leaving Auckland for San Francisco on December 11 will commence the new arrangements for a faster service that Avoro made on the tonnination of tbe contract Avith the Pacific Mail Company. Up to tho present timo (says our Auckland contemporary) tho service has been carried out by four but under the new arrangement tho contractors have the option of running the scrvico Avith only three boats if they so desire. Tho Pacific Mail Company havo decided upon tho latter course, knocking out the City of New York until about March next, Avhen she will, it is anticipated resume running, to enable tho company to lay up tho City of Sydney, for repairs, etc. The boats that Avill bo employed therefore to do the faster service Avill be thoZcalandia, Australia, and City of Sydney, and from tho cxhibitiefcs these three vessels have already given us of their speed, there is littlo doubt of their ability to keep up tho iioav service to timetable dates. Hitherto the time occupied or contracted for to do tho service was somo thirty-nine days, but now, under the new contract, this timo has to be shortened by two days—that is, tho mails are to bo landed at Auckland within thirty-seven days from London, or at Sydney Avithin forty-two days. The day of arrival of the steamers at Auckland from San Francisco Avillbc each fourth Saturday, instead of Monday. The day of departure will be tho same as heretofore, but the timo of the sailing of the boats has been altered from 2 o'clock p.m. to noon. Up to tbo present timo the service has boon carried out by the Pacific Mail Company Avith most commendable promptitude, tho duo date being very raroly exceeded; in fact, more often tho company have succeeded in getting their A r esscls into port two or even three days ahead of that time, so that, as we have already said, we think there is littlo fear but that the present vessels will bo able to maintain the service to the satisfaction of tho public.
