Tho newly elected Parliament met yesterday, when Mr Groom, an Opposition candidate, was appointed Speaker of the Legislative Assembly by a majority of 29 to Friday. The Queensland Parliament was opened yesterday by His Excellency Sir Anthony Musgrave. In the course of his speech His Excellency referred to New Guinea and the Pacific Islands, saying that lie believed a firm and united expression of opinion on the part of the colonies would lead to the annexation of those islands. Reference was made to the satisfactory conditions of tho colonial finances, and a number of bills of locid importance were promised. In the Legislative Council to-day the Addross in Reply was adopted. In the Assembly this evening the Hon. S. W. Griffiths gave notice that he would on Tuesday next propose a direct vote of want of confidence in the present Government. . This day. Sir Thomas Mcllwraith, tho Premier, recognising the weakness of his party in the new Parliament, has tendered the resignation of himself and colleagues. These have been accepted by tho Governor, and His Excellency has sent for Mr Griffiths to form a new Ministry.
