HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

A general meeting of members of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club was held at the offices of tho Agricultural and Pastoral Society this afternoon. Tho chair was taken at 2.15 by Captain Russell, President. There were eighteen members present. Tlie following new members were elected: —Messrs S. Locke, J. A. Cunningham, E. AY. Knowlcs, AY. H. Small, E. Broughton, R. Dobson, T. A. Shirley, Martin Ryan, and H. A. Cornford. Mr Dan vers proposed his motion, of which notice had been given, as follows : —" That section 1, racing rule 11, page 11, be altered by the omission of all the words after ' 9st' down to ' accepted' inclusive. The rule then to read, ' The top weight in any handicap shall not be less than 9st. Tho minimum weight iv a hurdle race to be 9st 71b.'" Tho present rule, he said, was unfair to both owners, handicappers, and the public, besides being an absurd one. Ho hoped the club would pass his motion without dissent, and he did not think anyone couldsay a word in favor of it. Since the matter had been brought up here first the Taranaki and Christchurch Clubs had passed similar resolutions to that he now proposed. In answer to Mr Shrimpton, Mr Danvers said the alteration was intended to prevent weights rising after the handicaps were announced. Mr Sutton seconded the motion. Mr Burke thought the matter might be allowed to stand over until after the_ association meeting of racing representatives iv

Christchurch, which would shortly take place. It could not be brought into operation before then at any rate. Mr Sutton and Mr Danvcrs pointed out tint if the resolution were passed at once it would show the Association that the feeling of the Hawke's Bay Club was in favor of a revision of the rule in question. The motion Avas carried. Mr Ryan moved the resolution standing in his name as follows :—"That in order to give practical effect to Rule 9, the election of a President, Treasurer, and Committee shall bo conducted iv tho followingmanner: —1. Nominations from members of the club to be in the hands of the secretary at least fourteen days before the day of annual meeting. 2. That on receipt of such nominations the secretary shall post to each member of the club a list or ballotpaper, containing the names of all members so nominated, such list or ballot-paper to be returned to the secretary on or before tho day, and within one hour after the opening, of such annual general meeting, leaving on the names of such President, Treasurer, and Committee as the member intends to A - ote for. Mr Cartwright Brown seconded the motion. After some discussion the motion was negatived by a majority of four votes. Captain Russell gave notice to move that a committee be formed to tako steps _to secure a suitable piece of ground for racing purposes on the expiration of the lease of the present course. The remaining business was unimportant.
