At the same meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commcrco at whioh a resolution was passed in reference to tho opening of the railway to Matamau as soon as the line should"bo completed, another motion was carried requesting the Government to permit a late train to be run from Napier to Hastings on Saturday nights. The application was reasonable enough, and was made by the Chamber in response to public wishes," and to meet a public requirement. Tho application has been refused on the cronnd that "tho probable amount of traffic to be gained by such a servioo does not appear i'o justify the necessary expenditure, and tho Minister therefore regrets his inability to do anything in the matter." In forwarding tho application tho Chamber pointed out that nearly all other towns possessed a similar railway convenience, and it was asked that a late train should be run as a tentative measure. Without, oven trying tho experiment, to ascertain what the result would be, tho Government are guided to their refusal by probabilities and appearances, and again give a proof of wretched administrative incapacity.
