August 31. At the wool auction to-day there was good competition for the various lots offered. The catalogue comprised 10,400 bales. September 1. Mr Lowthor was elected to-day by a large majority to the vacancy in the representation of Rutlandshire in the House of Commons. Seven Irishmen havo been arrested at GlasgOAV charged Avith complicity in Ijloaving up tho gasometer at the Glasgow gasAvorks in January last. At to-day's avool auction 0500 bales were offered. The tone of the sale Avas rather firm.
