The Chinese regulars are occupying a portion of Tonquin. The French Government have sent 1500 men to reinforce their army in Tonquin. The St. James' Gazette, in an article rcvieAving Sir George Grey's proposals on Pacific annexation, says that the attempted isolated action on the part of ono colony such as proposed in regard to Noav Zealand, tends to complicate the Avhole Pacific question. Mr ShaAV, the English missionory, avlio was arrested by the French at TamataA'c, claims compensation for illegal detention. August 29. Pending the issue- of the ofiicial despatches a better feeling prevails regarding the French in Madagascar. It is considered that Mr Gladstone has throughout the negotiations regarded the French policy in as favorable a manner as possible. The building in Avhich Avas held the Fisheries Exhibition is to bo retained for exhibition purposes. August 30. The Irish Land League have passed a resolution thanking Messrs Redmond, and expressing gratification at tho success of their mission. They also eulogised the o-enerous manner in Avhich the Irish Australians havo subscribed toAvards their cause. Mr Parnell has predicted that tho Government will shortly introduce a bill for tho self-government of Ireland. Vantian, King of Annam, has fled from Hue. The French have negotiated a treaty Avith Heipitma, a pretender. The Comtc do Paris discards the idea of Divine right, and .vill await the expressions of tho national will before claiming the throne.
Tho tidal wavo which sivept over Anjer has caused appalling losses, and the number
