ENQUIRY INTO THE WRECK OF THE ALMA.
Auckland, This day
An enquiry into the wreck of the barciuentinc Alma was held to-day before Mr Smith, R.M., and Captain Eraser, Nautical Assessor. John Patterson, the master of the vessel, deposed that her value was £1800, and the cargo £000. It was his first trip in the vessel, which was not swung- prior to sailing, and he had no deviation card for the compass. The vessel struck on Elizabeth Reef at 12.30 a.m. on the :3rd August. The weather was calm, but dark. He stated that the mate was in charge when the vessel struck, but Alexander Shaw, the mate, said he had gone below to call the captain, and was not on deck for fifteen minutes before striking. The crew were all sober. There were only two men on deck when she struck, and all were saved in the boats. The Court deferred judgment, and the decision will probably be given to-morrow.
