Replying , to questions, Ministers said the Government would, wherever they had control, see that all pilots' boats were provided with life belts; the late W. Blarney became surety for Brogden and Sons for £300 for costs—these have not been paid, and the Government could not forego the claim against Blarney's estate ; the Government could not interfere in the case of the To Aroha school committee refusing , the use of tho sclioel-liou.se for religious teaching out of school hours ;Mr Charltou's land [at Kawhia had been purchased from tho natives in 1810, and Sir George Grey had subsequently, as Governor, authorised the issue of the grant; it was not intended to give Angelique Therasse any pecuniary compensation as it would form a dangerous precedent; it was not the case that tho natives of Rotorua were dissatisfied with Government management of their lands under tho Thermal Springs Act; the contracts on tho Ofago central line would be completed in two years ; the Government would place a post office box on tho trains between Napier and Makatoku; tho Government would not recognise the lapsed claims of volunteers to land grants.

PASSAGE OF BILLS. The Adulteration Prevention Bill, the Special Powers and Contracts Bill, the Middle Island. Half-caste Grunts Bill, and the Patents Bill were pus.scd through committee, reported, read a third time, and passed. The Public Works Act Amendment Bill, the District Railways Act Amendment Bill, the Industrial Society's Bill, the Inspection of Machinery Extension Bill, and the Harbor Act Amendment Bill were read a second time and committed. In committee the Public Works Bill wns amended by the clauses relating , to the valuation oi' land taken for railway purposes and to railway offences being struck out. On one clause in the bill authorising the Minister of Public Works to grant licenses for railway refreshment rooms, the committee divided, and the clause was struck out by 20 to 23.

The Inspection of Machinery Extension Bill was amended so as to make Government machinery liable to inspection.

The Industrial Society's Bill, the Public Works Act Amendment Bill, the Harbors Act Amendment Bill, the District Railways Bill, and the Road Boards Act Amendment Bill were reported as amended, read a third time, and passed.
