July 31, More detailed reports concerning the murder of Carey shoAV that Carey's wife and children were passengers on board the same vessel. O'Donnell is also a married man, and was accompanied by his wife and family. It is authoritatively stated that O'Donnell Avas an emissary of _ American Fenians, Avho had despatched him by the steamer Melrose for the express purpose of assassinating Carey. Upon the arrest of O'Donnell his cabin Avas searched, and amongst the luggage in his possession an infernal machine was discovered. From this it is believed that had O'Donnel failed to kill Carey in any other manner he was commissioned to secure his object by tho destruction of the vessel. Carey never spoke after the shot was fired. His bod)' was landed at Port Elizabeth. The wounds on the corpse shewed that O'Donnell had fired tAvice, ono shot taking effect in the neck and the other ono in the back. _ After the occurrence Carey lived twenty minutes. O'Donnell has been put in a guarded prison, as an attempt at rescue was anticipated. August 1. Usobepu, the chief who recently defeated CeteAvayo, repudiates the idea that he has any pretensions or desire to be appointed king. During the week severe shocks of earthquake have been experienced at Oporto, Portugal, and also in California. /w August 3. An attempt was made to-day to blow up +- a linen factory at Cupar, Fife, the principal city in tho County of Fife, Scotland. The proprietor's attention being directed to a number of suspicious circumstances he caused tho building to be searched, Avhen a largo quantity of dynamite was discovered to bo secreted on the premises. Tho French troops have returned to the garrison of Hanoi, where they will remain till November, whon they propose to renew operations. At the preliminary examination held at Port Elizabeth into the circumstances connected with tho assassination of Carey, eA'idence Avas given that O'Donnell, Avho was charged with tho crime, had been on a visit to Australia recently.

The Post and Dispatch both contain articles severely commenting upon tbe action of the Imperial Government in deporting the Irish informers to Australian colonies. They characterise the course adopted as an insult to the colonies generally, and express their wannest approval of the prompt moasures taken by the Australian Governments to prevent such characters from landing. Mr Trevelyan, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, refuses to stato Avhether the informers on board the Pathan were despatched by that vessel with tho knowledge and acquiescence of the Government. >_ Tho Criminal Jurisdiction Bill, which was introduced by Mr Albert, one of the members of tho Council of India, and the object of Avhich is to confer on native magistrates jurisdiction over Europeans residing in India, is exciting much attontion in England. A large meeting in support of the measure was held in London last night. Mr Bright, the membor for Birmingham, presided, and delivered an address upon the evils existing under the present system of of criminal law in India, and pointing out how the scheme suggested by Mr Albert would remove the present anomalous state of tho matter. Motions approving of the bill were unanimously carried. The parcels post system recently introduced in tho United Kingdom has proved an unqualified success. Tho London agents of the Pathan havo stated that if any Irish informers Avero shipped by tho vessel they Averjin entire ignorance of the fact, the identity of the men not being disclosed. Tho rumor that Motley, ono of tho men • who gavo evidence against Kelly during the Phoenix Park murder trials, had been assassinated in Philadelphia, has been officially denied. It is estimated that the average yield of cereal crops in the United Kingdom, based upon the returns so far obtained from the harvest, is tAventy bushels per acre. The returns of the Avhcat crop show a large decrease upon that of last year.
