LONDON
July 19. The cargo of frozen mutton, consisting of 5769 carcasses, in the steamship British Queen, from Lyttekon on the 31st May, has arrived in excellent, condition. A portion was placed in the market to-day, and realised an average of sevenpence per pound. In consequence of the difficulty which has been experienced in making arrangements for the transit of the Suez mail across the Continent, and the strict quarantine regulations enforced at the various Mediterranean ports, the next two mails will be brought by steamer direct to Plymouth, instead of being landed at Brindisi. The Morning Tress, commenting upon the appointment of M. Waddington as French Ambassador to the Court of St. James in succession to M. Tissot, generally agrees in regarding it as an evidence of amity towards England on the party of the French Government, and as calculated to ensure a continuance of harmonious diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Mr Gladstone has announced his intention of making on Monday next, in the House of Commons, a statement as to the course the Government would pursue regarding the agreement concluded with Count de XiC.ssepa for the second Suez canal. The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under-Secre-tary for the Colonies, stated in the House of Commons to-day, in reply to a question, that Sir Thomas Melhvraith, the Premier of Queensland, had telegraphed to the Colonial Office that strong discontent prevails in that col:my at the decision arrived at by the Imperial Government on the question of the proposed annexation of New Guinea. Mr Ashley added that the Government still consider the proposal premature.
