THE PETANE ELECTION.
[To the Editor or the Daily Telegraph.] Sir,—You asked in last night's issue whether there was any truth in the report that, if Mr Tanner wero elected for tho vacant Boat in the County Council, ho would uso his influence to remove the county office to Hastings. Ido not know whether there be any truth in tho report or not, but I would point out this, that in the Council the Hastings district is already overrepresented, and that tho return of Mr Tanner would give that portion of tho county a preponderating innuonce. " Tho neglected wilds of Petane " is the term used to describe the district north of Napior, and it exactly tallies with its condition. MiTanner is a Hastings man ; Mr Cunningham is a Petane settlor. I would ask which of the two is likely to best represent us ? In the Council there aro Mr AY. Couper (Hastings), Mr Sutton (Hastings), Mr J. N. AVilliams (Hastings), and in tho event of his election Mr Tanner (Hastings). To oppose thosefour there arcbut'Mr Kinross, MrDolbol and Mr Rymer. Old settlers, like myself, recollect that in tho days of provincialism all public monoy, and all public sympathy, went south ; that we to the north had nothing spent upon our country to open it up or improve its value, and that it was not till provincialism died, and a stranger came amongst us—Mr Sheehan—that we even got the Port bridge. Let us take warning from the past, and elect one of ourselves. To my mind there can be no comparison between tho qualifications of the two candidates so far as Petane is concerned. And let me add that Petane does not bogin and end at Villers' Hotel.—l am, Sec, A Petane Settler. June 15, 1883.
