THE PETANE ELECTION.
[To the Editor of the Daily Telegraph.! Sir, —In your paper of last evening I noticed a letter from one of the candidates for this riding, Mr Cunningham, a very recent arrival from the South, in which he points to his services as an old resident at Ashley, and makes ont a very good case why, in the event of a vacancy at Ashley, his long and extensive knowledge of thai district might provo of service to tho electors there. In the same way do the past services and acquaintance with the wants of this district render it desirable to return hero an old tried settlor such ns Mr Tanner, rather than au unknown stranger who may prove to bo but a bird of passage after all. So at least think the great majority of our settlers, if I except perhaps " Oidd Jock " and Tetane Bill. June loth, 18.3.
