DEPUTATION TO VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT URGING ANNEXATION OF GROUPS OF ISLANDS IN SOUTH PACIFIC.
Wednesday. A deputation of several Presbyterian ministers and members of Parliament waited upon Mr John Service to-day to urge the importance of the colonies uniting to move the Imperial Government to annex the New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands, and New Britain, or to establish a protectorate over the groups. The Premier, in replying, stated that lie believed that it was England's special mission to civilise and elevate tho dark races, and promised that he would consult lii.s colleg'ties in the matter and take steps to further the views of tho deputation as far as possible. Mr Service added that he attached great weight, to resolutions of the Colonial Legislature, which were better than Ministerial action. Mauritius advioos to May I'd report that
the sugar crop this season is estimated at 130,000 tons. 250 tons have been cleared for Christ-church, and 500 tons are loading for Dunedin.
