Tho iiiraiml competition of tlio members of tlio above brigade was held tit tlio Spit on tlio Queen's birthday, when the following events were run off : — EIRST EVENT. Four-handed. —Engine to be placed in position, four men to fix one length of suction hose, lay oif and connect two fifty-foot lengths ho.se from each, wide of engine, fix branches, throw out and .secure brakes, and give one stroke on beat blocks. Messrs W. Lynch, F. Smith, A. Waddell, and W. Taylor .. .. 31 sees Messrs J. Gilford, J. Nelson, H. Brown, and W. Simmonds .. 35sees SECOND EVENT. Pairs.—Hose and Hydrant.—Two men to run Avith one fifty-feet length Avet hose, branch and hydrant; 100 yards to li.ro plug ; fix hydrant; lay oil: and connect hose; fix branch and show water. Messrs if. Gilford and 11. Brown 35secs ~ W. Siuunonds and J. Nelson 39socs ~ F. Smith and Ai r . Lynch .. 11 sees THIRD EVENT. Manual Engine.—Eight men to run engine 30 yards to cistern ; fix. two lengths suction hose ; lay off LOO feet length wet hose each side of engine ; fix brandies ; lock front carriage ; throw out and secure brake, and throw water over 10ft bar. Mr Connor's team.. .. .. 01, sees Mr Waddoll's team .. .. 55secs FOURTH EVENT. Hose-reel Flat.—-Eight men to run hosereel with three 100"-feet lengths wet hose 100 yards to tire-plug; iix hydrant ; lay ofl' two 100-feefc lengths lio.se; Jix branches, and throw two jets of water over 15-feet bar. Hose-reel and Ladder.—Eight men to run hose-reel with two 100-feet lengths wet hose 100 yards fo firo-plug ; fix hydrant; lay off 100-i'eet length hose ; iix branch; raise ladder, and show water frorii platform 20 feet high. MrJConiior's team ~ .. ~ 17:, sees Mr Waddell's team . . . . -IT.^ces The teams decided to divide tlio slakes rather than run again. The following arc the names of the teams •who competed for tho la.st thveu events: — Mr T. Connor's team —Messrs Connor, J. Gilford, A. Anuand, J. M'Bridc, J. Nelson, 11. Brown, G. Gifforcl, and W. Siminouds. Mr A. Waddell's team—Messrs Waddeli, C. Cranby, F. Smith, W. Lynch, W. Taylor, W. Seymour, 13. Harrison, and W. Ri'ddoll. The competition passed off very successfully, and Avas witnessed by a large number of spectators. The time made by tho compel ing teams Avas Aery good, considering tho heavy and dirty state of the streets. Chief Fire Inspector W. Miller acted as examining officer and refcrco, Mr Wilkie as starter, and Messrs Kracft and Den holm as time-keepers. An excellent luncheon was provided by Mr Bell, landlord of tho Crown Hotel, to which full justice was done by the firemen.
