THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A mooting of members of the above was ]i(?kl on Saturday .afternoon, Mr IT. S. Tilt'cu in tlto chair.

The Chairman explained that the object of the meeting was to consider matters relating to the last show. It had been found that the receipts on that occasion fell far short of the expenses, and even after adding the balance previously in hand it Avould be necessary to deduct 10 per cent, from the prize-money payable in order to balance the accounts. This .state of affairs was, no doubt, due in a great measure to the bad weather that prevailed' at the time of the exhibition. Tlio hon. secretary (Mr Margoliouth) then read the balance-sheet. The total receipts were £83 10s, including , balance brought forward, £11 0s Od; admission to show, £23 Ms 0d; entries, £o ; proceeds of auction, £10 3h; and cash subscriptions, £3 10s. The expenditure , included:—Prize-money, £17 19a Gd; band, £0'; printing and advertising, £'22 ; and smaller items for labor, refreshments, gas, &c, making a total of £83 10s, Some discussion followed, in the course of which Mr Margoliouth remarked that tlio society had been disappointed in not receiving a grant of £15 promised by the Agricultural and Pastoral Society. A mistake had been made in allowing members to transfer their tickets to others. He knew several cases where a dozen different people had used the same ticket.

Mr Chipping corroborated the latter .statement. He thought, however, the A. and P. Society would pay tlio grant promised if the matter was properly represented to the committee. After considerable discussion it was agreed, on the motion of Mr Lucas, to apply again to the Agricultural Society for the money. Several members expressed themselves very strongly about tlio prize money won by exhibitors at the late show not having been disbursed as yet. The lion. sec. having asked for information on tlio subject, it was decided to pay all prizes to those persons who entered the exhibits.

Tlio meeting then concluded.
